Position Description – Director of Music Ministries

Reports to:               Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) through the Pastor
Direct Supervisor:     Pastor
Overall Job Description: The Director of Music Ministries plays a major role in the life of John Wesley United Methodist Church. Our expectations are that this person provides faithful, professional leadership in planning, preparing, and leading music appropriate to the liturgy; coordinates musicians; and works with staff collaboratively to nurture and uphold these core values:

-A strong music program that proclaims and illuminates the written and spoken word.
-Music in worship that is received with enthusiasm and appreciation by the congregation and the community.
Hours per week: Approximately [average] 6-12 hours per week

Duties:
-In collaboration with the pastor and the pianist, provide planning, selection, preparation and performance of choral and congregational music and liturgies for all scheduled worship services, special festivals and seasons including Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, and Homecoming.
-In collaboration with the pastor, selection of hymnody to support worship.
-In collaboration with the pastor and organist/accompanist, educate and introduce to the congregation new hymnody and new liturgical music.
-Provide for adequate music rehearsals for all worship services (at least one weekly rehearsal for each ensemble/choir).
-Recruit, supervise, and encourage musicians.
-Encourage congregation members and others to become involved with the music ministries.
-Encourage congregation members to participate fully in worship services.
-Attend weekly staff meetings.
-Attend quarterly staff lunches.
-Maintain music literature and church music library.
-In collaboration with the organist/accompanist, oversee maintenance and a repair program for all church instruments.
-Develop and manage the budget for music ministry.
-Provide direct supervision for organist/accompanist.
-Audition and hire organist/accompanist in collaboration with SPR as needed.
-Email information for the bulletin and presentation to the secretary and pastor by Wednesday night each week, or as specified by the pastor on special occasions.
-Work alongside the pastor to develop ministries and seek to maintain a safe and joyful worship environment.
-Maintain CCLI account and information as needed.
-Willingness to learn or prior experience with ProPresenter.
-Ensure ProPresenter presentation is accurate and helpful to the congregation for Sunday worship.
-Work with JWUMC Children for children’s musical offerings in worship at least two times per year.
-Be involved with the social, fellowship, and mission events of the church body. (Every event is not mandatory, but events should be attended as able.)
-Other duties as requested by the pastor or SPRC.
Terms of Employment
A. Salary: $11,000- $14,000 annually, in semi-monthly increments.
B. Leave: Two weeks paid per year
C. Hours: [average 6-12] hours per week
D. Worker’s Compensation Insurance shall be provided as required by law.
E. Resignation Notice: The employee will provide a written 30 day notice of resignation. The
employee will receive a 30-day notice of termination unless termination is for cause.
F. Probationary period: The first three months on the job will be probationary. At the end of this term, our contract will become permanent unless either party decides to terminate our relationship.
G. Performance evaluation: The pastor, along with an SPRC representative, will conduct an annual performance evaluation with the employee. The position description will be reviewed and may be updated at that time if needed. The pastor and SPRC representative may meet with the employee throughout the year (e.g., quarterly) as a check-in regarding performance, employee feedback, concerns, etc.
H. Vacation/Time Off: The employee will provide at least two weeks’ notice of any absences to the pastor. Time off that is additional to the two weeks paid time provided must be approved by SPR ahead of time.

All employees must adhere to the United Methodist Book of Discipline, available in the church library. 
Employees will follow policies and procedures as established by John Wesley United Methodist Church. The signatures below acknowledge that a copy of the current position description has been given to the employee.
All employees are also bound by the Employee Handbook of John Wesley United Methodist Church.
